This blog has been a long time coming. There is a bit of confusion about the subject of alternate data streams(ADS) and no small amount of suspicion. So I want to take a few minutes to set the record straight on ADS.

As we reported, the core app updates for Mail, Calendar, People, and Messaging are available a little earlier than tomorrow, that is, they’re ready to go right now. If you don’t see them in the Windows Store, from the settings (right click or swipe in from the right), click on “check for updates” and you should be good to go.

Most of the commentary I've read so far about the loss of Google Reader has been about its use as an RSS client. But that's a red herring. The real victims were companies that had planned in 2005 and 2006 to build RSS sync engines. Google stomped them out of business like Godzilla sweeping through Tokyo.

Like in previous Windows versions, the built-in administrator account is disabled by default in Windows 8. You can easily enable it in Windows 8 with the command net user administrator /active:yes from a command prompt with admin privileges. However, if you are locked out of your computer, for example because you forgot your password, you need to enable the administrator account offline—that is, from a second Windows instance—to be able to log on with administrator rights. In a surprise reversal, Microsoft has changed the default behavior of Flash content on websites viewed using Internet Explorer in Windows 8 or Windows RT. Previously, sites had to be on a whitelist before Flash would work. The new behavior effectively turns the Compatibility View list into an exclusive blacklist of badly behaved sites.
