Bink wrote :

As a surprise to me Microsoft released Office 2003 SP2 yesterday, I installed it right away via Microsoft Update. I couldn't find any release notes or "what's new" documents. So I started looking in Outlook. I found a new feature in the Junk mail options: anti-phishing.

Office 2003 Service Pack 2

Windows SharePoint Services Service Pack 2 Available Today

From Windows Server division WebLog

My name is Adam Bogobowicz and I am a Product Manager for Window SharePoint Services. I am happy to share with you that today my product is getting more mature, simpler to deploy, and gains support for our latest technologies.

If you played with our Windows Server R2 Beta or RC0 code, you must have noted a new server role. Yes! Windows SharePoint Services will be shipping with R2 and you will no longer need a trip to http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2003/technologies/sharepoint/default.mspx to download the bits.

Now, if you do not mind visiting the download center, you can upgrade your server today with the latest WSS Service Pack 2. This latest WSS Service Pack will help you with new advanced extranet and intranet scenarios. It will support Windows Server and SQL Server 64-bit editions as well as .NET 2.0 and Visual Studio 2005.

You will have to be patient and wait for the Windows Server R2 RTM if you are looking for the Active Directory Federation Services support for Windows SharePoint Services. For more technical detail on Windows SharePoint Services 2.0 SP2 Beta in Windows Server 2003 R2, please take a peek at this whitepaper http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/thankyou.aspx?familyId=ABBA20F2-3625-4C9C-A412-AB9BBEBDB5E8&displayLang=en

New Build of Monad Available

We posted a new build of Monad today. It's available through the Microsoft Download Center. This means no NDA (which betaplace had) and no need to download the whole WinFX SDK. And, it's Beta 2, a newer build than both of those. Improvements include COM support, which was in a long time ago but was out of Beta 1.

You can download x86 and x64 versions.

MSN is offering to host universities' student email accounts, provide messenger functionality and blogging/e-folio capability via spaces at no charge to the university. To me, this is a really compelling story because it means that as a university there would be no storage, management or support costs involved in managing students email.

Microsoft Shared Computer Toolkit for Windows XP

Shared computers are commonly found in schools, libraries, Internet and gaming cafés, community centers, and other locations. Often, staff members who lack technical training are asked to manage shared computers in addition to their primary responsibilities.

Managing shared computers can be difficult, time-consuming, and expensive. Unrestricted, users can change the desktop appearance, reconfigure system settings, and introduce spyware, viruses, and other harmful programs. Fixing damaged shared computers costs significant time and effort.

User privacy is also an issue. Shared computers often use shared accounts where Internet history, online documents, and cached Web pages are available from one person to the next.

The Microsoft Shared Computer Toolkit for Windows XP provides a simple and effective way to defend shared computers from untrusted users and malicious software, restrict untrusted users from system resources, and enhance and simplify the user experience. The Toolkit runs on genuine copies of Windows XP Professional, Windows XP Home Edition, and Windows XP Tablet PC Edition.

You can download the toolkit or view the doc online.

Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 modifies NTLM network authentication behavior

Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 (SP1) modifies NTLM network authentication behavior. After you install Windows Server 2003 SP1, domain users can use their old password to access the network for one hour after the password is changed. Existing components that are designed to use Kerberos for authentication are not affected by this change.

Using Scripts to Delegate Control of Active Directory

When one of the Scripting Guys was a system administrator, he spent a large portion of his time working on "empowering users" (which was really just a polite way of saying that he spent a large portion of his time trying to figure out how users could administer themselves, giving him more time to play Doom). As the IT world becomes bigger and more complex, the idea of sharing the administrative burden becomes more enticing. For example, wouldn't it be great if you could give a user the ability to update certain attributes in Active Directory, but without making that user a full-fledged domain administrator? Boy, do we have good news for you ....
