So tonight I added a new 'Search my blog' box on the left. Special thanks to Basang panaginip blog that explained how to do it.

Windows Vista Product Guide

From Aaron's Blog :

Microsoft have posted the Windows Vista Product Guide on their Downloads Centre. At 61Mb and 316 pages this document is huge, but it's go some great detail about what Windows Vista is all about. If you're one of those people who thinks that Windows Vista is Windows XP Service Pack 3, then this document is for you, if you're not, then this document is still for you too. This is the document to give to your sales team (you may have to read it to them - could take a while and you might need a little bell handy to let them know when to turn the page..). Here's a break down of what the document covers:

  • Section 1: Introduction to Windows Vista
  • Section 2: Windows Vista Edition
  • Section 3: For All Users
  • Section 4: For Home Users
  • Section 5: For Business Users
  • Section 6: For IT Professionals
  • Section 7: Appendix

The document comes in Word 2007 and XPS formats, so you'll need either the Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack, if you don't already have Word 2007, or MSXML 6.0 and the XML Paper Specification Essentials Pack, if you're not already running Windows Vista, to view it:

Windows ReadyBoost

Jim Allchin wrote on the Windows Vista Team Blog :

Well with Windows ReadyBoost, if you have a flash drive (like a USB thumb drive or an SD card) you can just use this to make your computer run better with Windows Vista. You simply plug in a flash drive and Windows Vista will use Windows ReadyBoost to utilize the flash memory to improve performance.

Microsoft Embraces Linux, Sort Of

From «WinInfo Short Takes» by Paul Thurrott :

Yesterday, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer announced that his company had formed an alliance with SUSE Linux maker Novell and will work with Novell to build "an intellectual property bridge" between open-source software and the proprietary software world. More specifically, Microsoft and Novell are collaborating on technologies such as management software, document format compatibility, and virtualization and are working together to market a collaborative solution that will let enterprises combine Windows- and Linux-based servers in ways that are today difficult or impossible.

This "embrace" of Linux is, however, purely a pragmatic business decision. Parts of Microsoft, no doubt, still believe that Linux is Evil (with a capital E) and that its own solutions are better. The problem is that many of its customers actually own mixed environments now due to company purchases and mergers, and it makes sense for Microsoft to facilitate interoperability.

Frankly, most individuals will never see or understand the fruits of this relationship, and it's unclear to me how long Microsoft and SUSE will remain in bed together. (For example, if they succeed in knocking Red Hat Linux off its current perch atop the Linux world, will Microsoft lose interest in ailing Novell? My guess is yes.)
