SharePoint 2007 Features

This is a project for SharePoint 2007 Features. Features add new functionality to a SharePoint 2007 farm, site collection, or site. This project will create Features to address deficiencies in SharePoint 2007 or add new capabilities. You should understand a little about Features before trying these out. The packages here use batch files or WSP files to install the Features. After installation, be sure to activate the Features to see them in SharePoint.

Disable the “Set Network Location” dialog in Vista

This week I got a Windows Vista question that sounded easy, but turned out to be one of those things missing as a policy configurable option.

Whenever Windows Vista is connected to a new network, the system presents the "Set Network Location" dialog requesting to categorize the newly connected network as one of the following:

  • Home
  • Work
  • Public Location

Public is the only option that can be chosen without using administrative rights on the system.

When an admin does not want this dialog to pop when one of his mobile computers is connected to non-trusted network, there is no option in Group Policy to stop the dialog from occurring.

The user has the option to disable the dialog from the UI:

  • Right Click the network icon in the system tray
  • Click Turn off/on notification of new networks

This is not the ideal option for the average admin. So this can be arranged from the registry:

  • On a per user basis

    • Set the value "Show" (REG_DWORD) to 0 in
      HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Network\NwCategoryWizard
  • At the system level

    • Create a new Registry key (without any value) NewNetworkWindowOff in HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Network\NewNetworkWindowOff

RunAs Admin free tools

Sometime you want to let a «normal user» do something that require an administrator privilege but you don't want to give him your administrator password. Why not use the built in RUNAS command ?

Simply because you must type the password and you have no assurance that you user will not replace the command you want him tu run with his own.

Here you will find a few solutions to that problem :

  • CPAU. Command line tool that allows you to launch a process as another user similar to RUNAS only with encrypted job files.
  • SuperExec. Allow you to launch any application using administrator privileges. The parameters are encrypted and store in the registry. You can even impose a deadline or launching counter.
  • runasSpc. Command line tool allowing you to launch a process as anothor user. All process parameters could be saved in an encrypted file.

You could also look at other possibilities like MakeMeAdmin or Sudo for Windows to make a user temporaily a member of the administrator group. You will find those alternatives (and a few others) at

Update available for Server 2003 and XP to bring WinRM capabilities inline with the WS-Management standard

As time goes on, you will see more references to WinRM, especially with Windows Server 2008. Windows 2003 R2 had a form of WinRM that has now been updated to support the WS-Management industry standard.

Who should be interested in this? People that manage servers remotely and need a firewall friendly protocol to use. People that are looking into deploying Windows Server 2008 and especially Windows Server 2008 Core. People that need to interface with the BMC adapters on servers from remote.

Anyway, KB 936059 updates Windows XP SP2 and Windows Server 2003 WinRM components to bring them more in line with what Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 are using.
